2024 Grand Marshall
Bob and Krystal Standage came to Thomas County in June of 1988 as the County Extension Agriculture Agent. During his tenure there were many changes, growth and opportunities that occurred in the Extension Program.
Bob’s interest in Extension came at an early age. Both of his parents served as community leaders, project leaders, and fair superintendents.
He and his 5 brothers and 2 sisters were 10 year 4-Hers in Buffalo County, Nebraska.
The initial 4-H program consisted of approximately 100 members and during his tenure that number rose to as many as 235 enrollees. The credit for the growth belonged to the Community Leaders, Project Leaders and Thomas County Fair Board all working together to provide an outstanding learning experience. “I was just the glue that helped hold it all together.”
The 4-H Motto: To Make the Best Better. The 4-H Pledge: I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health to better living for my club, community and world. The leadership, responsibility, citizenship that were gained by those that participated in the program is still present in our community today. Many of the 4-H participants are now parents and are working to instill many of those same values in their children. To maximize the benefit of 4-H, it must be a family activity. Everyone has an important role to play.
The Extension Program also included the Agriculture Program and the Community Development Program. There were countless newsletters, newspaper columns, grower meetings, demonstration plots, landscaping workshops, radio spots and live TV interviews that took place during this time. Some of the Community Development activities included serving as a founding member of Leadership Thomas County, Facilitating two Thomas County Strategic Plan and much more.
He and his wife Krystal joked about it- “We thought we could be in Colby for a couple of years and then move on.” Thomas County has been a great place to raise our family. It is small enough for you to get to know your neighbor and large enough to provide most all the services that are needed.
“I’m very honored to be selected as the 2024 Thomas County Fair Grand Marshal.”
